Why Our Campsites Are Cozy - and Why That's Part of Loons Point's Charm

If you’ve visited us with a modern RV or a fifth-wheel featuring multiple slide-outs, you’ve probably noticed that our sites feel…snug. That isn’t an oversight—it’s a reflection of history, geology, and a unique lakeside setting.

A Classic Layout from a Simpler Era

Loons Point Campground was built in a time when camping was simpler—when families rolled in with pop-ups, teardrops, or compact 20-foot trailers. Slide-outs weren’t a thing, and most campers were barely 8 feet wide. The layout of our campground was designed for that era, fostering a sense of neighborliness and shared experience. That original charm still defines the loop today—a living tribute to the golden age of camping.

As Close to the Water as You Can Get

Many guests are surprised (and delighted) by how close our campsites are to the water’s edge. Today, environmental regulations would never allow a campground to be built this close to the shoreline, nor would a permit be granted for one. Loons Point is grandfathered in—a rare legacy site offering lakeside access that simply can’t be replicated. While that proximity enhances your experience, it also limits our ability to expand or reconfigure the campground. To preserve our shoreline and protect the natural habitat, we work within the original footprint—and we think the tradeoff is worth it.

Limestone: Solid as a Rock—Literally

Beneath Loons Point lies a thick layer of dolomitic limestone, a bedrock unique to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. While this gives us a solid foundation, it makes underground work extremely difficult. Installing or updating utilities—or widening sites—requires carving through solid stone. In many places, the only way to make changes would involve blasting, which is costly, disruptive, and at odds with the peaceful, natural setting we’re committed to preserving.

Historical Stewardship

Preserving the original layout is more than a nod to history—it’s an act of environmental stewardship. By staying within our existing footprint, we minimize disturbance to wooded areas and sensitive habitats. We avoid paving over nature and keep heavy machinery out of the picture. In a world where growth often comes at the expense of charm, we’ve chosen to keep Loons Point small, quiet, and authentic.

The Charm You Can’t Recreate

There’s a quiet magic to mornings here—where the smell of coffee drifts across sites that have welcomed campers for over 40 years, all tucked alongside the Les Cheneaux channel. These are places where stories were shared by the fire, not over satellite TV. When every site becomes a paved pad, that warmth—the soul of camping—starts to fade. We’re proud to preserve what can’t be manufactured: the feeling of being part of something timeless.

Tips for Today’s Bigger Rigs

We get it—RV designs have changed a lot. Here are a few tips for making the most of your stay:

  • Book the Premium Sites: We’ve created a few larger spots that can accommodate rigs up to 40 feet—reserve early to secure one.

  • Take It Slow: Our roads and turns are tight by modern standards. Swing wide, go slow, and enjoy the pace.

We know our sites are narrower than many modern parks—but they’re also closer to the water, rooted in history, and surrounded by the kind of peace that’s hard to find. Thank you for embracing the charm, the quirks, and the heritage of Loons Point.
